![]() Hornets 38 Workington 16 : 1067 watched this one, the press had this to say, Rochdale Hornets continued their stunning recent run with a comprehensive defeat of fellow play off hopefuls Workington Town. The win was Hornets 6th on the trot and their 10th in 11 N.F.P. games and puts them firmly in the running for a top 4 spot. But it didn't look like going Hornets way as Town built a 6-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Centre Kevin Hetherington opened the scoring with a 3rd minute penalty before racing fully 90 metres for a try after intercepting Danny Sculthorpe's pass. The scoreline remained the same for almost 20 minutes before the home side established a grip on th egame. Substitute Dave Larder twisted over the line after good build up work from Sculthorpe. The Hornets prop then put them in front bursting over from close range, and then sent Matt Calland over for a superb try just before the half hour mark. Danny Wood converted both tries for a 16-6 lead. The crucial score came 8 minutes into the second half and it was a piece of individual brilliance from winger Marlon Billy. The fans favourite burst through several tackles on a blockbusting run to the line from 40 metres out. The win was effectively secured 3 minutes later when man of the match Lathan Tawhai was allowed to collect a Sculthorpe bomb and race away to score. Town gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a well taken Graeme Lewthwaite try, but Hornets responded quickly with Billy's second. Another Lewthwaite effort gave the noisy Town following something to cheer about, but a try for hooker Darren Robinson confirmed Hornets excellent victory Other sporting press were less complimentary ?Rochdale Hornets were given a tough time as they recorded their seventh win in succession with a 38-16 victory against battling Workington Town at Spotland. Hornets got off to a sluggish start and were punished as they fell behind to a Kevin Hetherington penalty and try. The home side finally clicked into gear and a fluent passing move set up David Larder, with Danny Wood adding the extras. Hornets went further ahead when Danny Sculthorpe powered through for a second and when Matt Calland added a third Hornets were well in command. They confirmed their superiority four minutes after the interval when man of the match Marlon Billy cut in from the left wing, danced past four defenders, and carried two more over the line as he touched down. Latham Tawhai nipped in for an opportunist try on 50 minutes and Billy crashed over for his second 10 minutes later. In the interim, Graeme Lewthwaite finished off a slick passing move to give the visitors a glimmer of hope. Darren Robinson skipped in from acting half-back to extinguish Town's slight hopes and when Lewthwaite crossed for a second it was only a consolation for the visitors. | |||
