A tragic story...... but 16/07/2002 Media Man
A tragic story,
are Hornets really the bad boys?

The reporting of this story in this week's Rugby League Express, coming after the press coverage of the catering story, leaves one with the impression that someone certainly
likes to make 2+2=5 when it comes to Rochdale Hornets?

The full article in this week's paper, we leave you to make up your own mind.

Some stories are much more serious than others.

Darren Robinson is a young hooker who should have a great future.

The Rochdale Hornets star missed several weeks of the NFP season last year with a broken jaw, but he still scored 20 tries.

Unfortunately before the start of this season Darren discovered that his sister Adele's 10-month old baby had a very serious illness.

The baby Kyle had a condition called gangliosidosis, which is a brain disease that causes blindness, deafness and ultimately death. Sufferers from the disease deteriorate very quickly.

When Darren learned about his nephew's condition, he also learned that it would be necessary to raise £60,000 to send Kyle for a possible life-saving operation in America.

Darren took on a role as one of three fund-raisers for Kyle. Unfortunately that role meant that Darren couldn't attend most of Rochdale's pre-season training sessions. Sadly, after eleven weeks of fund-raising the family received the news that Kyle's condition was fatal, and that even an operation in the States couldn't save the little bloke.

The monies that have been raised will now go to a local hospice.

Unfortunately I'm told that Rochdale, in their wisdom, fined Darren £400 for missing training, and breaching his contract with them.

It wasn't necessarily the most generous or wise thing to do, even though Hornets would have missed Darren badly.

On the other hand, I'm told that St Helens, and Paul Sculthorpe in particular, have done a terrific job in helping to raise money for Kyle, as has Paul's brother Danny and Halifax coach Steve Linnane.

There were many others who helped too, and the Robinson family are very grateful to all those who came forward.

Sadly, poor Kyle now has only a very short time to live.
