Football and rugby will be used to motivate youngsters to greater heights in literacy, numeracy and information technology.

In a pioneering concept, an out-of-schools study support centre will be set up under the family stand at Spotland Stadium.

Tenders will shortly be let for the £116,000 centre a joint initiative between the Department of Education (DfES), the Football Foundation, Rochdale Council, Rochdale AFC, Rochdale Hornets and the stadium company.

It will be known as the Playing for Success Centre and managed by an experienced teacher, supported by a team of mentors.

The idea is to use football and rugby setting to get the best out of youngsters mainly Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils who need a little extra help.

The centre also aims to raise youngsters' self-esteem and motivation, helping them to become independent learners.

Deputy Rochdale Council Leader, Councillor Allan Brett, said: "I think this is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of Rochdale to combine sport and education."

Education Director Terry Piggott said: "Playing for Success in Rochdale combines two of my
passions, education and sport.

"It will help hundreds of or young people improve their literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
"It shows just how powerful a tool sport can be in helping raise standards. This is good news for Rochdale."

Hornets' chief executive, Steve Walmsley, said: "We hope it benefits the community and is well used by Rochdale's young people."

Ian Stott, a director at the football club, added: "Sport is a powerful tool for learning. Rochdale Football Club is excited to be part of this initiative for raising standards in Rochdale."

It is hoped the centre will be up and running by the start of the New Year.
