Hornets Nest Egg 09/01/2003 Jim

Hornets Nest-Egg's second meeting was a great success. Attended by around 30 supporters, the evening really gave the fundraising effort a major boost - with over £1000 in cash and cheques taken on the night (I haven't totted up the total yet).

Hornets coach Martin Hall was the guest for the night and he fielded questions from supporters for over an hour. He offered frank answers to questions on subjects including his goals for the season ('...third's not good enough this year...'), building links with the amateur game in the town, training facilities at Hopwood Hall College ('...the best facilities in my time at the club...') and who he sees as Hornets main rivals in the National League ( '... Salford will have a big advantage being full-time...'). He also gave us his thoughts on referees, the importance of developing local talent and why Bobby Goulding's not on his shopping list!

In addition, Martin answered several questions about the squad - including confirming that Marlon Billy is rapidly approaching full fitness after three knee reconstruction operations.

A vote of thanks for his efforts over the last two seasons drew a much deserved ovation.

The evening also included the auction of ex-Kiwi Dave Watson's Hornets jersey. It finally went under the hammer for £90 to Garry Webster who was bidding Sotheby's style by telephone from an undisclosed location!

The raffle raised an additional £40 for the association's funds and the new 'Sponsor a Try' initiative, whereby supporters can sponsor their favourite player from £1 a try, looks like another successful money raising venture. (there were no takers for Casey Mayberry at £20 a try, but someone did suggest Stevo at £10 a drop goal!)

It is hoped that the next meeting will take place at the end of the month - and Martin Hall accepted an invitation to bring the players along to make it a 'Meet the players' night. The date and venue will hopefully be decided in the next week.

Thanks to all those who came along - it was a good night and there's a genuinely positive feeling about the club and the coming season.
