It's been a bleak week inside Hornets fans' heads. Not enough that the gloss was taken off a fantastic performance by a referee who obviously thought that fifty points was humiliating enough. Not enough that a disappointing attendance has left supporters questioning the fickle nature of Rochdalian Rugby League so-called fans. The jailing of Paul Owen for 15 months has left everyone involved with the club reeling. The loss of his attacking prowess and defensive tenacity would test the nous of any coach. And, with the shadow of Paul's enforced absence casting a gloomy cloud, we make the trawl to Whitehaven.
'Haven have been a bit of an enigma this season. Drawing with Salford obviously triggered something they like up there in chocolate, primrose and blue because they?ve gone on to draw three more times. In fact their apparent taste for splitting the spoils leaves them in a rather unflattering 6th having won three and lost five.
There?s no doubt that Steve McCormack has re-ignited the local pride in Whitehaven (steadily increasing gates have proved this) and this week?s addition of Warrington forward Matt Sturm on loan will give them extra steel up front.
And we know to watch out for the tricky triumvirate of Leroy Joe, Darren Holt and Aaron Lester who've carved up lots of defences this season between them. Also featuring are the experienced Gary Purdham and ex-Hornet Chris McKinney (who started at prop last week against Dull KR).
Aside from the enforced change (Chris Irwin is hot favourite to slot in at full back) Hally will look at changing as little as possible. There's some concern for Radney Bowker who hobbled out of last week's game after an hour - but there?s also a small chink of light at the end of the tunnel, with speedster Wayne McHugh back in training, though it's probably a little early to expect a return.
Given the events of the last week, Sunday's game is a test of faith for all of us. A long trek to west Cumbria is hardly the game at which to display our unity, support and solidarity. But the players will know that those of us who make the trip are Hornets to the core, come hell or high water. If ever there was an opportunity to invest a day in showing our club how much it means to us, this is it. Put three mates in the car and do it.
We NEED a win this week - and we need to stand together.
You can make a difference.
See you there.
