Sunday's Coming - Keighley Cougars 19/02/2004 Jim
Sunday's Coming

Yes, it's Cougar time. The team which has won Rugby League's 'Least tasteful kit' award for the last decade gives us all a sartorial treat on Sunday.
Courtesy of a Workington side that couldn't beat an egg at the moment, Gary Moorby's Keighley side sit third in the ATC Pennine Group at the moment.

Keighley’s Gary Moorby is a happy man this week. Having seen his Keighley side cruelly denied an opening day draw against the vastly over-rated Halifax, then having seen them dumped out of the Challenge Cup by amateurs Sharlston, he’s finally got a win under his belt.

Keighley bounced back from an ignominious defeat - and hauled themselves off the bottom of our ATC group - by thrashing hapless Workington 42-6 last week in a comprehensive display starring out-half Adam Mitchell.

Mitchell’s distribution and nine goals from ten kicks led a solid performance against an indisciplined ToWn side who gave away 15 penalties.

The momentum for the Cougars’ win was provided by a big pack that includes Phil Stephenson, Chris Parker and roly-poly figure-of-fun, ex-Biff Jason Clegg. The guile in the pack is provided by craft hooker Simeon Hoyle.

Hotly tipped by many for a swift return to NL2, Moorby will be keen to show that his team of utilitarian grafters is more than capable of holding its own in any company - so we treat them lightly at our peril.

It’s been a good week for the Bobster too. But for a couple of incidents, last week’s step up the learning curve against Halifax could have been a closer affair.

There are definite signs that areas of the Hornets side are starting to take shape. A big pack with lots of gritty go-forward is a good start. And, without doubt, the addition of Richard Varkulis at centre gives us more poke out in the three quarters.

Inevitably, communication and instinct will improve as the team plays together more, but we’re already looking more like it and every week we see positives that will stand us in good stead.

Sunday’s game gives Hornets a great chance to boost confidence ahead of next week’s cup tie - and a chance to measure ourselves against another NL1 rival.

A win would tee-up the Warrington game nicely and continue the wave of positivity that’s been sweeping the club since the arrival of Bobbie Goulding. There’s undoubtedly a real feeling of unity and belief in what the little fella’s trying to do for our club - and he deserves all the support we can muster.

Be part of it - Sunday’s game will be a cracker. See you there.
