Sunday's Coming
Well, we made it.
When we began this journey in February at Hunslet, realistic expectations stretched as far as making it to Hull KR and still having a team to watch. But what a season it’s been.
Ably assisted by Sean Gartland and Darren Shaw, Bobbie Goulding has galvanised this club into something far stronger than the sum of its parts. Whilst there have been desperately challenging lows this year, the highs have been euphoric and it’s been a thoroughly enjoyable season.
Primarily, though, the faith, belief and sheer bloody-minded refusal to give in from everyone in this club has not only seen us through - but has seen us evolve, mature and grow into the club we always wanted us to be.
Certainly the club leaves the 2004 season stronger in every way than it’s possibly ever been. The revitalised spirit is tangible and the feeling amongst supporters is that we’re on the verge of transforming our lowly battling club into something a whole lot more exciting.
Win lose or draw, Sunday’s game provides a focus for celebrating what we’ve achieved. An opportunity for Hornets fans to acknowledge the strides we’ve taken. Messages suggest that we’ll be taking a decent following to Craven Park for the first leg of the end-of-season-party.
And we’d love a win. Victory at Craven park would see us finish the season only a point behind Hull KR - a pretty good return on our season’s work. But Hull KR as an entity are absolutely desperate to erase the flogging they got at Spotland earlier in the season in their scramble for a decent playoff draw.
With Mal Reilly gone and the ‘dream ticket’ coaching partnership in tatters, it falls to Martin Hall to salvage something from the Robins’ season. He’ll have former Hornets Paul Owen and Damian Ball in the side - but Hornets fans might just suggest that in Michael Platt and Dave Cunliffe, we got the better end of that deal.
The main danger comes from half back where Phil Hasty and Paul Mansson have the ability to open games up if you give them the time and space to do so.
But we’re sure that the Bobster will have other ideas. He’s asked his team for one last ‘big effort’ as Hornets seek to end this miraculous season on a high.
And we’re also sure that you’ll be there to join in the party. What else would there be to do on Sunday that’s so important? For those of you heading to CP, the supporters’ convoy will meet at Morrissons for 11am and there are still some places left on the second supporters’ coach.
The support this season has been tremendous - thank you all.
We’ll be in our usual place on the main stand side by the tunnel. Come and join us, wear your colours with pride, make a bit of noise and help make it another great afternoon.
We’ll see you Sunday.
