Swinton match report 23/04/2007 Mark
That's Entertainment!
Hornets 30
Swinton 16

A few more pictures.

What an entertaining game, a much closer one than the score line suggested.

Hornets started the brighter and on 5 minutes Eric Andrews scored wide on the right, a lovely move with a great pass missing out the centre for Andrews to stroll in.

Three minutes later, Phil Hasty dummied in virtually the same position and went over, only for this to be disallowed, presumably for bouncing the ball when touching down.

Hornets were bossing the game and ten minutes later Hasty was over, this time making no mistakes as he ran as close to the posts as he could. 12-0

Eventually Swinton ventured into the Hornets half and a harmless looking kick was picket up by Gary Hulse, about 5 yards out from his own posts. Maybe because of the score line, Hulse tried to dance around the tacklers, and then bizarrely he ended up being pushed back over his own goal line (quite wide out). Hornets fans disappointed that a drop out would ensue, but wait, no Mr Leahy had other ideas and somehow Swinton were being awarded a try! Marlon Billy being the man on the spot, how the three tacklers had managed to come up with the ball and score nobody was quite certain. 12-6

Eight minutes later and with half an hour on the clock, Swinton scored a fantastic try. Darren Woods broke the line just inside his half and scampered down the Hornets right wing. Eric Andrews in pursuit and Hulse pushing him wide from full back, but you could see the determination in Woods face and he diced in at the corner. Applause from both sets of fans. 12-10

Hornets were rattled, and just before half-time a scrum to Hornets and a planned move went horribly wrong and Dave Ashton gladly picked up the loose ball to stroll in from thirty yards, the Hornets faithful shaking their heads, BUT wait Mr. Leahy brought the play back, Yipee! AND then gave Swinton the put in at the scrum! The Swinton faithful were now shaking their heads.

Half-time and Mr. Leahy warmly applauded from the field.

The fact that Hornets hadn’t scored any points in the second half previously hadn’t escaped Darren Abram, and Hornets came out early and practiced some warm ups and moves.

WOW! did this work, a superb flowing move down the left ended with Hulse running on the angle and in the opposite direction to everyone else , to score at ease.

Four minutes later, slick handling in the same position saw Bolu Fagborun slip in Craig Robinson for a trademark scamper to the posts. 24-10.

Martin Moana ploughed his way in for Swinton on 60 minutes (24-16) and John Gledhill finished it off for Hornets on 78 minutes with a flowing move down the right (30-16)

Kevin King kicked 5 from 5.

A good result, with Hornets being rewarded with a home tie against Widnes in the quarter finals.
