Keighley match report 07/07/2008 Jim
Douze - and you lose.
Hornets sink against 12-man Keighley (Hornets 22 Keighley 36)

Once again Hornets produced a performance straight out of the 'You've Been Framed' coaching manual to hand Keighley a win that - in the end - they barely had to work for. Leaving a trail of unforced errors, coughed ball, daft penalties and some decidedly half-hearted tackling behind them, Hornets were denied the bonus point with the last play of the game. And it seemed rather fitting, given the nature of the game that had gone before.

Both sides exchanged early penalties to get the scoreboard under way. Then, on 13 minutes, with a Keighley having seemingly fizzled out, Hornets' defence allowed Jones to smuggle the ball out of a dead tackle for Potter to score.

Hornets responded with an attack of their own. But Janan Billings lost possession close to the Cougars' line and the visitors broke upfield courtesy of a pass a full three metres forward. Referee Mr Hicks had the whistle to his lips, but, for some reason, chose to wave play on. With the defensive line in disarray and the home crowd baying for some sort of intervention from the officials, the move ended with Potter scoring at the opposite end.

Hornets did rally briefly before the break, with Martin Ainscough's neat show and go, improved by Sam Butterworth, narrowing the margin to 12-8.

Hornets started the second half in good style. Chris Hough's teasing bomb fell through the hands of Presley and Ian Sinfield touched down the ball to tie the scores.

Then came the game's turning point. Keighley centre Fogerty's attempted decapitation of Chris Spurr saw him dismissed and, with scores level and the visitors reduced to 12, the game hung in the balance.

When an over-ambitious penalty from Chris Hough failed to find touch, Keighley seized the initiative - marching quick-smart downfield for Rawlings to bash his way through.

Nine minutes later a hopeful Keighley downtown kick was turned over and the visitors worked a huge overlap for Nicholson to score.

The re-introduction of Janan Billings gave Hornets a temporary lift as two carbon copy one yard sneaks caught Keighley's defence flat-footed. But Hornets undid their hard-work with more static defence as Feather ran through flailing arms for a soft 75th minute try.

At 22-30, Hornets were hanging on for the bonus point, but with the last play of the game Fawcett broke from the base of a scrum to amble 40 metres untouched to deny the home side any consolation.

Darren Shaw's summary was about as succinct as it gets: "Our completion rate was 54% and you can't do anything. We do the tough things well, but you have to start completing sets and applying some pressure but we're just not learning. Week in week out we are forcing the pass and turning the ball over on their terms... putting ourselves under a hell of a lot of pressure."

Those seeking any sort of positive from the game can point to the fact that both Workington and York above us also lost. But with Blackpool and Hunslet picking up wins, it's vital that Hornets get to grips with their completion rate and start putting sides on the back-foot. Before the bottom of NL2 starts catching up with us.
